Wintergreen essential oil:  If you’ve ever used a pain-relieving ointment or rub with a mentholated aroma, then chances are you already know what wintergreen oil smells like. The clean and minty scent of this herbal oil is associated with relieving pain and stimulating mental wellbeing. Wintergreen oil is extracted from a shrubby evergreen plant called ‘Gaultheria Procumbens.’  The leaves are used to make wintergreen essential oil.  Wintergreen Essential Oil (and Birch)  are chemically identical in that they are the only plants in the world that naturally contain methyl salicylate.  This is one of the most beneficial ingredients in massage for soothing head tension and muscles after exercising.

Wintergreen oil has a sweet and fresh scent, similar to mint. It’s very pungent, but not unpleasant. Wintergreen’s medicinal uses have been widely known for many centuries, particularly by the Native Americans, who used the leaves to treat respiratory tract infections.

Safety Note: Wintergreen oil is still used medicinally today, but should NEVER be taken internally in the concentrated form of essential oil even the purest distillations.  Instead, you should dilute a very small amount in a safe carrier oil, such as coconut oil, almond oil, or lotion.

Skin:  Wintergreen in its undiluted form is too strong for the skin, but it makes a stimulating additive to massage oil.  Always keep away from eyes and mucous tissue.  It’s use in lotion or liniment can bring about soothing relief from many forms of nervous skin reactions.
